Solution
As an ongoing project, where many of these were not redesigned at the same time, it was a challenge to come up with solutions to problems that would work across the board. As a result, the solution was living and ever changing. Once completed, the collection possessed similar styling and formatting which did a lot for the presence of the Decagon brand in the customers hand. The illustrations, photography, layouts, and copy were all revised and created to make the out of box experience for the customer as streamlined and familiar as possible.
Design Details
Meaningful Imagery
Whether it was the cover image, sensor detail, or fill image on the inside cover, I wanted them to bring meaning and value to the guide as a whole. When looking for stock photography to be used as a fill on the inside cover, I looked for images that would relate to the sensor family that were used and also possess a sense of expanse and possibility. By looking for images that held these same ideas, I was able to bring continuity throughout the collection while still making each family individual.
Technical Illustrations
As a part of the redesign, I remade every illustration that was used within the guides. My end goal was to make the illustrations feel like they belong in a high science guide, but also have some character. The resulting figures used flat color and varying line weights to add detail without being overly illustrated.
Layout and Typography
These guides are informational tools and it is imperative for good communication that the type is easy to read and the layout is just as easy to follow. Using a six column grid and delicate typographic details, the resulting guide template was easily manipulated and adapted based on the need of the content. This also aided in achieving my goal of creating a collection of guides that could stand alone or be viewed as a family of work.
